Move From Banking to Retail Adds Up for SA Finalist Scott
A career in banking is a world away from selling wall and floor tiles but Scott Sporer can see the parallels better than most.
He'll be up against the cream of SA's franchise businesses drawn from a wide range of sectors.
"I came to Port Lincoln to work in retail banking and made a break after 12 years to go into ownership of a hardware store with three partners. Opening a tile shop seemed a natural progression," Scott said.
"I've gone from approving loans for people making the biggest purchase of their life to helping many of them make-over the bathroom or kitchen of their most important asset.
I've been an owner of the business for nine years but manager for just three so being named a finalist vindicates that change to a career at Beaumont Tiles and all my hard work."
The father-of-two steers a business that continues to build or retain market share in the face of increased competition and a tough economic climate.
"The local market went through a building boom a few years ago but it is extremely tight right now," Scott said.
"Running a business that's 650km by road from head office and the tile warehouse poses unique challenges.
"We're part of a national group which means that we have a broad range, we can offer great pricing, and we keep up with style trends.
"For me, the other key areas to success are knowing what you sell and going the extra yard for your customers.
"We've also made a point of putting back into the community by supporting local sporting clubs and causes like Ronald McDonald House that assist families who come from remote rural locations like Port Lincoln."
Judges for the award said that Scott's nomination by Beaumont Tiles was part of an exceptional field of entries.
The awards will be announced at the NAB Franchise Council of Australia SA Excellence in Franchising Awards Gala Dinner on Friday June 28.
