Why is it called engineered timber flooring?
Our engineered timber flooring has many layers to bolster its strength! The unique assembling of the multi-layer plywood core, creates a more structurally stable product. Multi-layer plywood is made up of multiple thin eucalyptus hardwood sheets that are arranged, glued and pressed with the grain running at right angles to the adjacent sheet. This produces a strong, highly stable core making it less prone to expansion and contraction when exposed to moisture and humidity.
Topped off with a real hardwood timber veneer, that uses up to 90% less timber than traditional solid hardwood floors, reducing the impact on the environment.
The benefits of engineered timber flooring
Let us take you on a tour of our engineered timber flooring. The top layer is a UV protective lacquer coating, which means it has a very durable top protective coating that enhances the look and feel of the timber below it.
In addition, the engineered flooring is scratch resistant to give you more confidence in how much wear and tear your timber can take. And the top layer also is really comfortable underfoot, great for when you forget to put on your slippers or Ugg Boots in the morning.
The second layer is all-natural, veneer of genuine hardwood timber in all its stunning beauty. Ethically and sustainably sourced, your engineered flooring will look good and make you feel good. Then comes the multi-layer eucalyptus hardwood plywood layer for superior strength and stability to the whole engineered timber flooring installation.
Overall, engineered timber flooring is a luxurious floor with many benefits within its layers, but it is also a healthy choice for allergy and asthmatic sufferers. Each plank is 100% formaldehyde free, and the Boris treatment makes it insect-resistant, mould resistant and odour free.
Engineered timber flooring installation
We strongly recommend that a professional and qualified installer lay the engineered timber flooring installation. In addition, we advise following the instructions from the Installation Guide.
Even if you aren't laying the flooring yourself, there are a few things you should be aware of. First things first, what's underneath your engineered timber flooring installation? Your planks can be installed over concrete, particle board (such as yellow tongue), plywood, cement sheeting, tiles or cork.
Steps that you might be involved in:
- Thoroughly clean and dry your existing floor.
- Ensure your substrate is prepared; it may need to be levelled, repaired, or installed.
- When your new Engineered Timber Flooring arrives, it needs to be delivered 48-72 hours early so it can get all cozy in its new home by placing horizontally on a flat surface in the installation area away from direct sunlight. Check that your room temperature is between 15 and 22 degrees. Acclimatisation is essential in getting your beautiful new timber flooring installation correct.
- Remember to check that all your planks are okay, without defects and ready to install so you don't get a surprise after installation.
- Make decisions about trims and transitions from your other flooring with your installer.
- For best effect, boards should be laid lengthwise, pointing towards the incoming light (from a window, door or other).
- Then it's handed over to your qualified installer to install the planks.
Hot tip: Keep spare planks stored away in an excellent flat space, just in case, to replace any future damaged flooring.
Engineered Timber Flooring - FAQs
What is engineered timber flooring?
Timber flooring is bringing nature inside the home, and celebrates all it’s unique looks and beauty. Ethically grown and cut trees are transformed into timber planks that become one of the most popular types of flooring today. The most common types of timber floors that people choose are; solid timber/hardwood flooring, engineered timber flooring and bamboo flooring.
Solid timber floors are incredibly beautiful when milled and sanded to the highest quality. Engineered timber has multiple layers to strengthen and protect. Bamboo flooring is made of strands of bamboo that have been glued together to make a durable floor.
Is engineered timber flooring durable?
Timber flooring is durable and hard-wearing. It does need some regular maintenance and care to keep it looking gorgeous. Engineered timber flooring has an innovative top layer that provides protection and a sturdy wear layer for high-traffic areas in your home.
Is engineered timber flooring easy to clean and maintain?
We want to see your engineered timber flooring have a long happy and healthy life. Firstly, check that your room has no direct sunlight hitting your timber flooring throughout the day. It does come with a certain amount of UV protection, but you’ll also need to use curtains or blinds, just like you or I putting on a hat to go out into the sunshine.
Super-hot days aren’t a favourite of most people, and your timber floor doesn’t like too much heat either. Keeping the room temperature, as a rule of thumb, between 15-25 degrees Celsius and also humidity 35-50% which is ideal for all of us.
Prepare to move back into your space after your timber flooring installation by putting floor protector pads under furniture legs or castors. And buy some quality door mats for your entry doors to reduce the dirt coming into your home.
Your pets now need regular manicures and pedicures to keep those cute little paws padding over the floor instead of scratching. And you’ll need to put those stilettos away to avoid little dents too.
It is super easy to get a cleaning routine happening for engineered timber flooring.
- A daily zip over the floor with your stick vacuum, or soft bristle broom.
- A quick wipe-over with a soft cloth when there are liquid spills
- A weekly mop with a damp mop (it can’t be a wet mop or a steam mop!) and a low alkaline cleaner. The BONA floor care products are awesome, highly recommend them! Don’t use harsh chemicals, your gorgeous floor won’t like that.
- A light rub with a soft cloth to remove any scuff marks you might find.
Can engineered timber flooring be refinished?
Yes, your engineered timber flooring can be refinished. This is a job for the professionals because if sanding is needed, it needs to be super light to remove just the top lacquer coating, leaving the hardwood layer untouched. You don’t want to change the colour of your floor by removing the original staining colour.
A recoating lacquer such as Treffet lacquer will need to be applied to complete the refinishing.
