Types of Toilets
There are two categories to look at when discussing types of toilets. Firstly, the type of toilet pan and where the plumbing is set up. Or, if you are designing your bathroom, you’ll want to know about the different styles and features of toilets.
There are three common types of pans for toilets in Australia; P-trap (big pipe out the wall), S-trap (big pipe through the floor), and in older homes, you might find a Skew trap (big pipe out a side wall). It’s always best to consult with your plumber about the best type of toilet for your specific room, as it can be an expensive exercise to change the trap/waste position, and you also need to measure your set out, which is the distance from the wall to the centre of the waste outlet.
After you have worked out what type of trap you need, it’s time for style and features.
The basic toilet choice is a connector or link suite, where a pipe connects the cistern and the pan. This is handy if the setout position is outside the norm, as it gives more flexibility with installation.
A close-coupled toilet suite is an excellent choice if your setout is quite standard. The cistern and the pan are integrated to get a streamlined look and are easier to wipe over and clean.
A back-to-wall toilet or wall-faced toilet suite sits flush next to your wall with all the pipes concealed. These bring a minimalistic appeal and can be curved, squared, or anything in between to follow your chosen accessory or tapware shapes.
Going that one step further is having your cistern tucked away behind a wall with a flush plate and a wall-hung toilet. An in-wall toilet suite reduces the footprint in your bathroom to achieve a larger-looking space.
Innovation meets style. The future of toilets has been created with the age of Sensor Taps, Bluetooth vanities, WIFI enabled under tile heating, and now the smart toilet. Sustainability is also a key topic, with various water-saving features available.
Additionally, an essential function of toilets is the flushing mechanism. Beaumont offers a range of flush plates in stainless steel, matte black & chrome. These flush plates and toilet flush buttons feature unique and modern designs to complement your toilet suite. A great feature of dual flush toilets is their help with water conservation.
Toilets - FAQ's
What is a standard size toilet?
A toilet room should be both functional and comfortable. We all know that a plane’s toilet rooms are purely functional and not built for comfort! But, have you ever been in a cubicle or toilet room in a house that just isn’t big enough? The door swings inward, and getting in and out is a squish, etc. The ideal-sized toilet room must be 900mm x 1600mm to be comfortable and functional.
What toilet height should I choose?
Your toilet height choice is a personal preference for everyone in your household. A standard height for a toilet seat is around 430mm. Any size below that is an excellent choice for vertically challenged people. A higher toilet seat will be a more comfortable choice for taller people, and to be considered an accessible toilet, the seat needs to be 460-480mm from the floor level. For those little ones growing taller yearly, there are many different and colourful options for steps and stools to make any toilet height comfortable until they grow tall enough for the toilet.
Which toilet shape should I choose?
First, determine what type of trap you need for plumbing your toilet, which will govern your options. Most toilet shapes come in P-trap or S-trap options; a big pipe takes waste through the floor or the wall. Now it’s time to think about the overall look of your bathroom. What style and budget have you in mind?
Have you chosen your tapware and accessories? We recommend selecting a toilet style that follows your overall plan for your bathroom. Use those same lines for your toilet if your bath or basin is rounded or curved. If they are squared off, choose a toilet style with more straight edges.
Do you like the sleek all-in-one look, hiding all the plumbing, then a Back to Wall or In-wall suite is for you.
Is a traditional or vintage look more for your bathroom? A Connector or a Close-coupled suite will look right at home. These styles are also quite budget-friendly.
Do I need a plumber to install a toilet?
Yes, we would leave this job for the professionals. Trust a fully qualified and licensed plumber, and this job is crucial to get right. We don’t want to imagine the damage it could cause if it goes wrong with the plumbing fixtures in your toilet. The stink alone would get you reaching for your credit card!
