Cleaning Your Grout Is The Ultimate Quick Win To Restore Your Bathroom

When it comes to keeping your bathroom clean, tiles often take centre stage, but what about grout? It is, after all, an integral part of your tiled bathroom; so, it makes sense that it requires the same amount of TLC to stay looking great.

For many, cleaning grout can often be overlooked for more prominent cleaning needs yet refreshing it can actually give tiled spaces a whole new lease of life.

Australia’s largest tile retailer, Beaumont Tiles, sees this firsthand, with many customers coming into stores for tile cleaning guidance when it’s the grout that needs maintenance.

Beaumont Tiles design specialist Rachel Gilding says that when cleaning tiles, often the products and methods used can either harm the integrity of grout or simply be ineffective.

“The everyday cleaning of tiled spaces can often impact the grout. It’s the combination of its porous composition and typically light colouring that leaves it prone to staining and visually ages the space,” she said.

“Many people don’t realise that cleaning your grout is the ultimate quick win for a bathroom makeover. It’s a great trick to refresh any tiled space, even if you’re renting.

“The good news is that with a bit of elbow grease and the right tools, it’s possible to restore old grout to its former glory.

“Half an hour and some effort will take years of build-up away and leave you with a new looking bathroom for a small fraction of the price of a full renovation,” Ms Gilding added.

Here are Rachel’s top tips for restoring grout – just in time for welcoming friends and family back into your home.

Why is my grout going dark or black? Flooding tiles with water and detergent causes the washed off dirt to simply settle into grout lines and dry into a film, leading your grout to appear black,” Ms Gilding said.
Why is my grout turning white? Under certain circumstances, a white powder can form on grout – a natural phenomenon called efflorescence caused by soluble salts rising to the surface of a cement-based product.
Which grout is best? For an easy to clean, yet beautiful bathroom, there is no better option than glazed porcelain with epoxy grout.

Why is my grout going dark or black?

When floors are washed with too much detergent and water, the dirt can collect in the grout lines. Don’t stress if the lines between your tiles have gone dark or black – it’s just dirty grout.

“Flooding tiles with water and detergent causes the washed off dirt to simply settle into grout lines and dry into a film, leading your grout to appear black,” Ms Gilding said.

In truth, the black is just the film of grime sitting on top of the grout, so cleaning correctly from the get-go is essential.

“I recommend using plain, clean, warm water as this is usually enough to lift most soiling off glazed ceramic tiles, but you can also add some PH neutral cleaning solution to the water for an extra boost”

A key point to remember is that if you do clean your tiles using any form of detergent, always rinse the area well with clean water and dry thoroughly.

Why is my grout turning white?

Under certain circumstances, a white powder can form on grout – a natural phenomenon called efflorescence caused by soluble salts rising to the surface of a cement-based product.

“Efflorescence dries out on the surface, and the remaining salts appear as an annoying white powder – the good news is that it’s easy to fix with a few tricks,” Ms Gilding said.

“Simply brush the grout with a stiff-bristled brush, vacuum away and repeat the process from time to time. Eventually, it should reduce the severity or stop recurring altogether.

“While tempting, do not continually wash the grout lines, as this will dissolve the soluble salts only for them to reappear once the grout is dry.

Which grout is best?

For an easy to clean, yet beautiful bathroom, there is no better option than glazed porcelain with epoxy grout.

“Epoxy grout is made from resins rather than a cement-based mix, which makes it waterproof and resistant to stains – perfect for shower cubicles, high traffic areas or kitchen splashbacks,” Ms Gilding said.

“If you opt not to use epoxy grout, the key is to seal the grout after installation. It’s simple to do and will dramatically reduce the cleaning time, keeping your grout looking sparkly new while repelling mould.
