Selling Houses Australia 2023
Maroubra NSW
Romano and his wife Iris moved to Australia from Italy over 30 years ago, and in 2010 settled in Maroubra. When the home was put on the market in 2018, it was quickly snapped up by a developer, but this deal later fell through.

Sadly, two years ago Romano lost his wife of over 50 years and was left living alone in a home that felt too big for one. Romano’s daughters Eliana and Andrea have been on hand to help, and Eliana moved in, along with her husband, to care for Romano. The family worries about the stairs and differing levels of the house, and thinks their Dad needs to let go of the house in order to move on to the next chapter of his life.
It has been a heartbreaking two years for the family. They know the home is tired, old fashioned and needs fixing up, but Romano is disillusioned in thinking that Eliana and Andrea can do all the work. They can’t renovate the house by themselves and desperately need the help of the Selling Houses team. A sale would mean the family could find a new home which is more comfortable for Romano, where they all can live.
Exterior - Before
Dennis wanted to make the home appealing from the first moment and went about this by painting the whole exterior of the home in a monument colour to make it stand out and create a modern feel.
The Versailles Mosaico White Matt Tiles laid at the front of the entrance to suit the style of the home, are a feature packed 200X200 wall and floor tile. Inspired by old world motifs with a mosaic like detail, this is a truly unique tile. These tiles are designed to form a larger pattern when laid they are sure to leave a lasting impression. A feature plant position out the front which could also be admire from the front bedroom.
The back garden needed a lot of work to bring it up to scratch. Dennis wanted to create a two-level garden which involved substantial earth works. We added hedging the entire way around the perimeter of the property to create a really lush and luxurious atmosphere and used edging to clearly define the sections of the yard and giving it purpose. To keep maintenance demands low, we opted for durable turf which was self-watering.
As there was no formal dining room inside the home, we created a separate space outside where people can gather and entertain. The outdoor section was styled with furniture, an outdoor rug and crucially, a BBQ.

Interior-Before
The layout of the kitchen was not a good use of space which Wendy wanted to focus on addressing. We used a flat pack kitchen to create a bigger and better layout, with new appliances and feature lights. We also created areas to sit and eat making it more functional and welcoming. To address how dark the kitchen felt, skylights were installed to flood the space with more natural light.
The third bedroom had a second door which opened onto the kitchen which wasn’t beneficial and made the room feel more like a thruway. To create more options for the space, we closed off the door making it a proper third bedroom! This also meant we had another wall to work with for styling and the layout of furniture within the room.
New paint, wallpaper and furniture were used throughout the home to take it from old and tired to fresh and welcoming. Wendy opted for modern colours and added warmth and cosiness using soft furnishings and rugs.
