Grates & Drainage - FAQ’s
What are floor grates?
Floor grates are an elegant drainage system that has as much practicality as it does with a luxurious look in your bathroom or outdoor areas. They come in a choice of styles, lengths and widths, and some can be cut to custom lengths.
How are floor grates installed?
Tiling and grouting need to be installed and properly dried before installing the grate.
- When screeding the bathroom floor in preparation for tiling, use a template to make provision for the space the grate needs. The best results are always when they are installed wall to wall. Some grates are able to be cut to size, check in-store if you need this type of linear drain system.
- To secure the grate, apply a large blob of silicone per 100mm on the underside of the grate. Then place down in position. Make sure you keep the grate clean of any materials that shouldn’t be there to secure the fit. Check that the grate is completely level, and allow the silicone to dry. After it’s all dried, use silicone that is the same colour as your floor grout silicone around the edge of the grate to finish.
How do tile grates work?
When a tiler screeds the floor, they are levelling the floor towards the drain, and the flow of the water will be enough to push the water down the drain inside the floor grate. When you use a linear drainage system, the fall of the floor will be directed towards a lineal catchment rather than a singular point. This is brilliant when you are wanting to choose a larger floor tile on a bathroom floor.
Do I need a floor drain in my bathroom?
A floor waste is a requirement in the shower area, but it would depend on your bathroom design if you need an additional floor drain outside that.
- You will need to check with the plumbing compliance regulations in your state.
- There are options for you to choose a bath or basin with overflows, and that could possibly be an alternative to an additional floor drain.
- In the end, you can choose to only have the minimum requirements of drainage in your bathroom, but they are there to moderate the risk of overflowing water into other areas of your home.
How do I clean bathroom grates?
Cleaning a bathroom grate is simple. You can use warm water or a weak solution of ph neutral cleaner with a soft cloth. Gently use a circular motion to clean away any debris or hair that may have collected between cleans. Then rise off with warm water. There may be a layer that can be lifted off to access the catchment/channel below.
It is very important not to use abrasive or hard chemicals on your bathroom grates.
