Bathroom Tiles - FAQ’s
When should bathroom tiles be changed?
There are many reasons to change your bathroom tiles. It could be as simple as finding you can’t stand the current colour first thing in the morning. But generally, it’s to update/renovate the bathroom, or there are plumbing issues and repairs that need to be made. When you are ready to change your bathroom tiles read our guide on how to tile a bathroom!
What bathroom tiles are best?
We need to discover the bathroom tiles that are best for you and select the right tiles for your space. The bathroom tiles you choose need to be suitable for the purpose. Your floor tiles need a wear rating for the amount of foot traffic your bathroom has and a suitable slip rating for slip resistance. Your wall tiles need to be practical for the space, for example, a penny round mosaic tile has double the amount of grout, so scrubbing that grout in the shower might add too much time to your cleaning routine, instead choose an extra large tile with minimal grout for a quick wipe down.
Should bathroom tiles go to the ceiling?
Tiling to the ceiling is our ‘go-to’ for a beautifully modern, luxurious and seamless look. It is also a highly practical decision as it protects all the walls of the bathroom from water damage over time. If the walls of a bathroom are tile free, those surfaces will need to be maintained carefully to keep mould and mildew away. They will also need to be repainted or wallpapered every 2-5 years depending on how good the ventilation in the room is.
Why do bathroom tiles crack?
Bathroom tiles are simply the best choice of wall and floor coverings in a wet area. Used in conjunction with a waterproof membrane, they are as protective as they are beautiful. There are a few common reasons why bathroom tiles might crack.
- Direct contact with a heavy object; excessive weight dropped on a tile might cause it to crumple or chip under the pressure. It’s always good to keep a box or a few extra tiles when installing tiles for these types of accidents.
- Building movement; every building expands and contracts with temperature changes. This shouldn’t be a big issue for bathroom floors as a perimeter joint of 3mm should be allowed for when tiling. These are between the edge of the tiled area and any restraining surface such as a wall. This joint then needs to be squeaky clean and filled with silicone.
- Incorrect Installation; there is a possibility that the tiles aren’t laid properly, with the right spacing, or with the correct adhesive for the space. Always get the right advice and products in-store before you start a DIY project in your bathroom, or confirm from past projects that your tradie produces quality work before you approve a quote.
- Water damage; if the cracks appear in the shower, bath or basin, there’s a possibility the waterproof membrane behind your tiles in the wet areas might be damaged. You’ll need to call in your plumber to take a look.
- Low-quality tiles; the last alternative is simply that your tiles might be really low quality. At Beaumonts, all first-grade tiles have a lifetime quality guarantee!
What colour bathroom tiles are best?
White bathroom tiles are hands-down the most popular and highest selling wall tile colour. There are some very good reasons for this. Australians absolutely love the bright, airy feeling, especially in one of the smallest and perhaps darkest rooms in a home. But we cannot say for absolute certainty it is the best colour for a bathroom. We have a gorgeous array of colours to choose from, and it might be one of those that catches your eye and you fall in love with. With that in mind, finger mosaic tiles are a popular choice for those wanting to add exciting colours in a linear format to their bathroom. Colour makes an amazing impact on how your bathroom makes you feel. If you are choosing bathroom tiles for your own home, our advice is don’t hold back in choosing the ones you absolutely love.
