Choosing the right bathroom vanity is a key part of creating a stylish and functional space. Many renovators (and designers, even) start with the bathroom vanity unit and design the bathroom around that. What many people don’t realise is that many of our bathroom vanities are fully customisable and are made exactly how you like it.

With so many options available, the process can seem overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be! Follow our step-by-step guide to help you design and order the perfect vanity unit tailored to your style.

1. Find your style and get inspired!

It’s no good designing your bathroom vanity if you aren’t sure on the look you are hoping to achieve. Start with our What’s My Style Quiz to find your unique interior design style. Read our expert’s tips for achieving a successfully designed bathroom in that style, and then come back here when you are confident that you know what you’re looking for. It’s also a great idea to head to our Complete Bathroom Packages to see 40+ designer bathrooms with vanity units so you can start to work out what you do/don’t like.

2. Choose the Design

Start with the bathroom vanity design. Browse our supplier brochures to see the available styles and find your favourite.

Here are some quick tips when selecting a vanity unit design:

1. Think about your style for the bathroom. A traditional style bathroom will call for a different vanity design than, for example, a Mediterranean style bathroom.

2. Consider your available space. Wall-mounted vanity units offer a sleek, floating look and maximise floor space which are a great choice for small bathrooms, while freestanding bathroom vanities provide a classic, substantial feel.

3. Don’t forget functionality: Think about your household’s needs and look for bathroom vanity designs with the right balance of storage, counter space, and visual appeal to suit your needs.

3. Choose the Size

Once you have your vanity design selected, look at the available size options and choose an appropriate size for your space. Keep proportionality in mind.

Consider the overall dimensions of your bathroom and the available wall space for the vanity unit. Leave enough room for the vanity drawers or doors to open fully and ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the bathroom.

Unsure on sizing? Here are some vanity common size suggestions:

ROOM SUGGESTED VANITY SIZE & NUMBER OF BASINS
Main Bathrooms & Main Ensuites 1200mm+ vanity size  |  1-2 basins
Smaller Bathrooms & Ensuites 600mm+ vanity size  |  1 Basin
Powder Rooms 400mm+ vanity size  |  1 Basin

4. Choose the Basin Design, Basin Placement, & Tap Placement

Once you have selected the vanity style and the size, it’s time to select the basin, and set out your basin and taps to tailor your vanity unit’s functionality to your household.

Choosing the basin:

Basins are often included in the bathroom vanity price. Check the supplier’s brochure for options. Most suppliers have options for above-counter, semi-recessed, under-mount, or inset basins.

If your heart is set on a different basin, or you already have one, you can obviously skip the basin selection, but be sure to still nominate your placement on the vanity, so the supplier appropriately places the waste hole.

Placement:

Centred basins provide symmetry, while offset basins create more counter space on one side. If you have selected a single basin on a 1200mm or larger bathroom vanity, you can choose an offset placement to one side, freeing up more usable counter space.

With the basin now in place, choose where you’d like your basin tapware to sit. Choose from behind or beside the basin, or skip the taphole entirely if you’re installing wall hung taps.

5. Choose the Vanity's Benchtop Surface & Cabinet Finish

The bathroom vanity and top finishes can completely transform the look of the vanity. Check the supplier brochures for available options, or ask your local store to see the swatches in person.

Bathroom vanity finishes range from different woodgrains to beautiful and vibrant paint colours. Match the colour and texture of your vanity to your bathroom tiles or create contrast for visual interest in your bathroom.

6. Choose the Vanity's Handles & Legs (If Applicable)

Small details like handles and legs can enhance your bathroom vanity’s character and add another element of your personal style

Many bathroom vanities come with a range of handle options from integrated finger pulls for modern aesthetics to decorative knobs and bars.

If your bathroom vanity has legs, don’t forget to consider how the shape and finish of the legs will impact the look of your vanity and the bathroom overall. Straight legs lend themselves to Modern style bathrooms, while angled legs are better suited to Traditional style bathrooms, and ornate legs are perfect choices in Vintage style bathrooms.

7. Optional Vanity Extras

Your bathroom vanity is now perfectly configured for you and your personal interior style…but, you don’t have to stop there! You can go a step further and enhance your vanity unit with functional and luxurious extras. Some of our suppliers offer optional add-ons including; LED lighting kits, storage organisers/trays, and integrated power outlets for hairdryers, shavers, or for charging devices.

Some vanity units even have the option for built-in tech like Bluetooth speakers to really help you level up your in-shower concerts.
