Sonny & Alicia

   HOUSE 4

Get ready to meet Sonny and Alicia, the Gold Coast couple bringing grit and good humour to The Block. Sonny, 44, will be the only tradie in the competition this year, putting his plumbing experience to the test. His wife Alicia, 42, is stepping away from managing a dental practice to take on the renovation adventure of a lifetime.

With three kids cheering them on from home, the pair will be juggling the pressure of competition with the emotional pull of family. And while they promised not to embarrass their children... Alicia admits that might not go quite as planned.

“We’ll definitely have to apologise when we get back!” she laughs.

Expect to see them push beyond their comfort zone — going from “a bathroom here or there” to tackling a full-scale transformation, all while keeping their kids front of mind as their ultimate motivation.

WEEK 1:

BATHROOM

Ooof, this is different," Marty says as he steps into House 4’s bathroom — and thankfully, it’s good different. The judges are immediately taken by the warmth of the aesthetic, with Darren even admitting he’s “besotted.” They applaud Sonny and Alicia’s bold move to ditch the shower screen, noting the space functions well without it and feels perfectly suited to Daylesford. But it’s Week 1, and no room escapes unscathed. Like the others, they’ve placed their vanity too high, leaving Shaynna baffled by this recurring misstep. She also calls out the vertical towel rails once again, along with uneven tile cuts that disrupt the visual flow. Marty points out that those fine details are what separate a great bathroom from a perfect 10. Still, the judges see real potential. “I feel really strong about this couple in their execution and their planning,” Shaynna says. “They could blow it out of the park.

Marty Fox

“Good floor plan, everything seems to be working”

Darren Palmer

“I think this is a good start, this is a cracking bathroom.”

Shaynna Blaze

“I think the layout is incredible. The choice of tiles is perfect”

WEEK 3:

MASTER ENSUITE

Sonny and Alicia impressed with a calming, stylish ensuite featuring a green concrete bath that Shaynna called “absolute heaven” and the best styling of the day. But their risky layout change with a sliding entrance wasted space and compromised flow, preventing it from being the perfect 10 it could have been. Still, Marty saw buyers loving its timeless, luxurious feel.

Marty appreciated the room's feminine touch and marketability. Overall, the judges were pleased with the boys' progress and encouraged them to embrace their quirky style.

HEPBURN BATHHOUSE CHALLENGE

Sonny and Alicia’s Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa impressed with its understated elegance, where the tile and heated bench became standout features that defined the space. Neale praised the room’s simplicity and balance, noting how the design encouraged a true sense of switching off and relaxing. While a small pendant light felt out of place, the overall effect of the tiles and clean finishes created a spa retreat that felt both refined and deeply calming.

WEEK 8:

GUEST SUITE

Sonny and Alicia delivered a fully finished guest suite that impressed the judges with its bold colour drenching and Alicia’s own wallpaper design, which Shaynna loved so much she said she’d buy it herself. While the cabinetry tweaks were noted, their inclusion of a mini fridge and coffee station helped offset the missing kitchenette. The real highlight came in the ensuite, where the judges were thrilled with the skylight, vanity, and especially the tile choices, which brought the whole room together. A thoughtful tile selection doesn’t just finish a space — it transforms it, helping Sonny and Alicia “find their groove” and win over the judges completely.

WEEK 9:

LAUNDRY, MUD ROOM, PANTRY & WC

It’s been a huge week for Sonny and Alicia, from celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary to delivering a back-of-house reveal that got the judges talking. Their floor tiles in the pantry created a strong first impression, though Marty thought the space itself needed more function, suggesting a solid shelf could have made it complete. Shaynna lit up at their clever inclusion of a drying cabinet in the laundry — the first of the season — while the overall finishings, from taps to handles to the addition of a fridge, impressed across the board. Darren praised both the laundry and pantry for doing their job, even if he found it odd they were combined. But the real showstopper was their powder room, with luxe stone and a striking basin that Marty deemed “unfaultable.” Even in the garage, with its sensible layout and paddock wallpaper, the judges couldn’t stop thinking about that powder room — a space that’s sure to carry their scores this week.

WEEK 11:

BACKYARD & POOL

Sonny and Alicia’s vision of a classic Aussie backyard came to life this week — and the judges loved it. With lush stretches of grass, a beautiful arbour ready to bloom with wisteria, and plenty of space to entertain, their design strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and sophistication. Their use of Beaumont Tiles’ Pompeii Travertine Crema Structured Textured Pavers around the pool adds a timeless, natural finish that complements the landscape beautifully. Inside the cabana, the Tundra Ash Microtec Textured Tile and Channelle Travertine Brown Emboss Honed Mosaic create a warm, inviting feel, perfect for their guest-ready retreat. It’s no wonder the judges called it “a textbook backyard” — House 4 nailed the brief with elegance and heart.

Ricky and Haydn created a functional and spacious kids' room with plenty of beds and a stylish laundry. Their efforts, costing $30,544, impressed the judges. The judges appreciated the well-planned and executed space, noting its great color palette, lighting, and attention to detail. They believed the room would appeal to families and suggested adding a ceiling fan. The laundry also received praise for its functionality and beauty, including a powder room and additional bench space. Overall, the judges were impressed with Ricky and Haydn's work and believed it would be a dream for buyers.

WEEK 12:

BACKYARD

Ricky and Haydn, two "exceptionally good-looking" novices, took on the challenge of landscaping their backyard themselves after their previous teams pulled out. Despite their lack of experience, they managed to create a stunning outdoor space that impressed the judges. The large lawn area, perfect for backyard cricket and footy, was a standout feature, as was the impressive pool, swing set, and unique Grafico palm tree tiles. While the judges acknowledged that the space could have benefited from the finishing touches of a professional team, they were overall impressed with the boys' creativity, effort, and the overall aesthetic appeal of their backyard.
