Fixing Guidelines

Wall

W.R. Boards or Fibre Cement Sheets

Floor

Particle Boards, Fibre Cement Sheets and Concrete

Background preparation

Wall

W.R. boards or Fibre Cement Sheets shall be fixed according to manufacturer's instructions. Ensure that sheets are dry, clean, free of dirt, oil and all forms of contamination.

Floors

Fix wet area boards or compressed Fibre Cement Sheets according to manufacturer's instructions. Ensure that sheets are dry, clean, free of dirt, oil and all forms of contamination. Apply ABA Multiprime to floor and leave to dry.

Priming

The surfaces to receive ABA Multiprime are fibre cement sheets and concrete. Apply primer with paint roller or brush. Primer will be touch dry in 25 minutes depending on weather conditions. Coverage of primer is approximately 7 square metres per litre.

Shower recesses

The interface between wall and floor and between vertical corners is the most critical. Apply a silicone bead and allow to cure.

Apply reinforcement mat in the following areas:

  • the coving areas between walls and floor.
  • the hob and floor and wall and hob.
  • vertical corners up to point where tiling finishes.
  • Bridging piece of tapware.

in the following manner:

Apply a coat of Barrierflex mixed 1 to 1 with a flat trowel, paint roller or brush. Immediately position the Reinforcement Mat in the wet Barrierflex to ensure it is completely bedded with no air below it. Cover the Reinforcement Mat with a 2nd coat of Barrierflex.

Waterproofing

Use Beaumont's Barrierflex as waterproof membrane. 1:1 ratio.

Apply 2 coats of Barrierflex with paint roller or spread on wall and floor with flat trowel to 1mm thickness.

Forms a seamless membrane which is waterproof, flexible, tough, lightweight and durable.

Adhesives

The following adhesives are suitable for tiling over a Barrierflex waterproof membrane.

  • Barrierflex 2 part
  • ABAfix 2000
  • ABAflex
  • Super Tileset
  • Resaflex 2 Part or Pre-mixed
  • MPP

Grouting

Do not fix ceramic tiles with tight joints.

Joint widths

Do not fix ceramic tiles with tight joints. Use the following limits, unless otherwise specified.

Internal Ceramic Tiling - Minimum 1.6mm - Maximum 3.0mm
External Ceramic Tiling - Minimum 4.0mm - Maximum 9.0mm
Quarry Tiles - Minimum 6.0mm - Maximum 12.0mm

Grouts

Use Flexigrout coloured group mixed with water. Do not use cement. Flexigrout should not be used at a joint width greater than 6 mm. Use ABA Quarry and Slate Grout mixed with grout additive for wider joints.

For situations where hygiene and/or resistance to chemical is a major consideration, use ABA Expoxy Mortar Grout.

Movement joints

It is important that the following guidelines regarding movement joints be followed in all jobs.

  1. Provide movement joints over construction joints.

  2. At junctions between different background materials.

  3. At fixtures interrupting the tile surface, eg., columns, etc.

  4. At internal vertical corners.

  5. At perimeter of floor.

  6. At maximum 5 metre intervals in a grid pattern and 3.5 metre intervals for walls.

  7. Joints shall go right through the tile and adhesive bed to the background and be kept free from dirt and adhesive.

  8. Joints shall not be less than 4mm and not greater than 10mm wide.

  9. Seal all movement joints with flexible sealant.

  10. Seal all wall and floor junctions with flexible ABA Colourflex Silicone.

NOTE

All adhesives should be used in accordance with the manufacturer's literature and instructions on the packaging.

The manufacturer reserves the right to change formulations, specifications or instructions at any time and updated information should be sought before proceeding with any installation.
