Stark patios and lifeless landscapes are being replaced with earthy tones, raw and rough luxe, and edgy style as this spring’s design direction. Where once we created outdoor rooms that flowed from inside out, we’re no longer forcing Mother Nature to conform or bend to our will.

“Australians still covet an alfresco play area but design is now about being sympathetic to the outdoors rather than replicating the indoors,” says Beaumont Tiles Communications & Design Specialist, Christie Wood.

According to Beaumonts, who closely follow European trends, three themes encapsulate new outdoor Spring schemes: earth, formation, and raw. “Flow throughout your entire property is still key in design but we’re shying away from bright light flooring and inviting the outdoors to come inside through more natural applications,” Christie said.

“Natural design gives a sense of calm, relaxation and focus. Imperfections are now being celebrated in beautiful knots and grains of wood and the movement within natural stone.”  Black and charcoals are the new taupes and creams for outdoor. These hues create visual depth and are perfect to set off planting.

Traditionally, black and white tiles were used in a checkerboard design. This staggered pattern can be traced back 2,000 years to the Romans and was reignited during the Renaissance as grand homes emulated the riches of that long lost empire.

Post war 1930s saw a resurgence of checkerboard in the lobbies and ballrooms of grand hotels – a fashion statement replicated across many home hallways, bathrooms and kitchens.

Wind the clock forward 80 years and black & white is trending again, but with a twist.

The House Rules teams are in Geraldton, a coastal city in the mid Western region of Western Australia.

The brief this week: transform a 1970s styled Spanish villa into a comfortable family home for owners Karina and Brian and their three children.

Two out of the five rules have a big focus on nature – the teams must 'bring the outside in with texture and tone' and 'give nature's treasures pride of place'.

Many designers would lean towards timber to deliver against this brief but tiles can play a big role here too and even act as a substitute for natural wood.

Stone tiles would be an obvious choice but there are a number of other options within the Beaumont Tiles that deliver a warm, textured and organic look and feel.

Here are some products from our range that are perfect for a beautiful, stylish and a little bit unique approach to bringing the outside in to your home.
