Coverlam 1000x3000 mm porcelain rectified.
A stunning architecturally-biased laminated porcelain tile with endless potential for innovation in construction and interior design.

It’s a maximum impact slab tile and, using roller press technology, has minimum depth at a 3.5mm (or 5.6mm) profile creating ceramic skins for exteriors and interiors. The 3.5mm tiles have fibreglass strength so they can bend on a curve and are reinforced on the back with 0.5 mm thick glass fibre mesh for optimal mechanical strength.

Bob Beaumont | Managing Director | Beaumont Tiles
Bob Beaumont

This article appears in the Sep/Oct 2016 issue of Business Franchise Australia & New Zealand

Finding the right business to invest in is a challenge in itself but when it comes to making the final commitment, the more hurdles could prove the better choice.

About half the Beaumont Tiles’ 108 stores are franchises and both parties – the franchisor and the potential franchisee - should undertake plenty of due diligence before joining forces.

It’s not just a matter of buying a franchise and expecting the money to roll in - you are starting a business. A franchisee should understand that the franchisor is only there to provide a brand and system - they are not there to do the work for the franchisee.

On the flip side, the great thing about a franchise is that you are buying into a proven model.

There’s a few business philosophies I’ve learned along the way that can help steer the course.

Castle Hill Beaumont Tiles has been recognised as the national retailers’ best performing store taking out the National Award Best Sales Performance, 2016.

The store is owned by husband and wife team Pieter and Kerene Myburgh, and their son Jaco, who bought the franchise two years ago.

There’s a sure fire way to make a huge statement in a home without taking too many design risks and making costly mistakes - and that’s to create an impressive backdrop.

Whether it’s a kitchen splash back, an entrance portico or a stunning bathroom back wall, a backdrop as the design focus frees you up to play with your décor as the seasons change or every few years.

Beaumont Tiles Communications & Design Specialist, Christie Wood, said a fundamental rule of design is to create a dominating feature: a colour, a massive chandelier or pendant light, a painting, a piece of furniture or rug, or a display area.

“With a first impression you want to make an instant impact. A backdrop that carries visual weight is not only a scene stealer, it sets the scene for building your design story,” Christie said.

“Great design brings personality, flair and character to a space. An impressive backdrop using pattern, texture or a shaped tile is a fabulous accent option for those who can’t decide on a dominating focal point.”

Stark patios and lifeless landscapes are being replaced with earthy tones, raw and rough luxe, and edgy style as this spring’s design direction. Where once we created outdoor rooms that flowed from inside out, we’re no longer forcing Mother Nature to conform or bend to our will.

“Australians still covet an alfresco play area but design is now about being sympathetic to the outdoors rather than replicating the indoors,” says Beaumont Tiles Communications & Design Specialist, Christie Wood.

According to Beaumonts, who closely follow European trends, three themes encapsulate new outdoor Spring schemes: earth, formation, and raw. “Flow throughout your entire property is still key in design but we’re shying away from bright light flooring and inviting the outdoors to come inside through more natural applications,” Christie said.

“Natural design gives a sense of calm, relaxation and focus. Imperfections are now being celebrated in beautiful knots and grains of wood and the movement within natural stone.”  Black and charcoals are the new taupes and creams for outdoor. These hues create visual depth and are perfect to set off planting.

Not every room is big - think second bathroom, laundry, kitchenette, or courtyard/terrace - and styling them is often the hardest due to their small dimensions.

For many Australians, smaller sized accommodation is the abode of choice with the Housing Industry Australia reporting an 11 percent increase in units being built in Australia in the past year.

Choosing the right tile for smaller space needs particular attention because the aim is to maximise the design and give the illusion of more space. But getting it right is more than just the size of the tile – it's the colour, the way the tile is laid and the type of grout used that can make a difference.

The Block contestants were tasked with making the most of their terraces in the Melbourne apartment block. A trick they picked up on quickly was to create a seamless flow and a subtle point of difference.
